Formats - Newspapers
For more than 40 years, The Center for American History's Research and Collections Division has preserved the historical and social heritage recorded in the pages of newspapers in Texas and throughout the United States. The Center's Newspaper Collections contain more than 4,500 Texas, Southern, U.S., and non-U. S. titles and is the largest collection of its kind in Texas. The division is also home to the the newspaper clippings morgues of the NY Herald-Tribune, the New York Journal-American, New York Times, and Newsweek Magazine.
Are you looking for a particular newspaper?
Staffing constraints prevent Center staff from undertaking in-depth research for patrons, including going through many newspapers looking for vaguely defined articles or doing exact page/cost counts. There is a lot you can do for yourself before contacting us.
Use the listed indexes to determine if the Center holds the title(s) and date(s) range (s) you seek. It is important to know that most of the inclusive dates given are for INCOMPLETE runs. We may not have every issue between the given dates.
The Research and Collection Division's Newspaper Collection contains both original newspapers and microfilmed newspapers.
Many titles on microfilm may be borrowed through interlibrary loan or a duplicate copy purchased. A dagger(†) in the indexes to newspaper holdings indicates that microfilm rolls can be purchased from the Center for American History. An asterisk(*) in the indexes to newspaper holdings indicates that microfilm is available through interlibrary loan.
Due to the rare, unique, and often delicate nature of the materials in our care, the Center does not directly participate in interlibrary loan unless we are the only repository available. Patrons, working with their local public libraries' interlibrary loan departments, should direct their requests for CAH holdings to UT's General Libraries' Inter-Library Service department. The Center will loan only microfilmed newspapers, and only if an ILL copy exists. ILL requests will first be sent to other, circulating libraries before they are considered at the Center.
Original newspapers are not loaned or photocopied. Patrons, using their own cameras and under direct supervision of CAH Staff, may photograph original format newspapers without flash or additional lighting. Patrons must complete an ITEMS PHOTOGRAPHED BY PATRONS form. The resulting images are for research only and may not be published.
Remote requests for copies from microfilmed newspapers must contain exact citations, including:
- city of publication
- title of newspaper
- a date within 2-3 days
- exact content description
- page/column numbers (if available)
Much of this information can be found using the indexes to the right and resources cited in the Guide to Newspaper Collections. If you are unable to provide exact citations or unable to visit the Center to conduct your own research, we can provide you with a list of Austin area researchers available for hire.
Microprints may be made by patrons at a cost of $.25 per exposure. A self-service microfilm reader/printer is available to patrons in the information services area. The machine does not accept coins. UT Copycards are available for purchase at several campus locations.
Microprints made by Center staff after receiving exact citations are $0.30 per exposure.
Entire reels of microfilm (where there are existing negatives) can be duplicated for $30 per reel. At this time, original microfilming is strictly limited to special cases and accepted only at the CAH's discretion.
Other costs associated with copying can be found at here.
