Description: A black cast iron scale. The balance arm is a silver metal, with movable weight markers that fit into marked notches. Weight units include grains (1-30) and drachm (1-8), plus a heavy, unspecified unit. Stamped from bottom and painted in gold is FAIRBANKS PATENT. APR. 23 1878 . The arm is stamped CHM PAT’D ’AUG’ 20 1878. Three pairs of balances were given to present donor Gruber by Miss Lizwertz, former director of Grace Hall at UT. Balances were used by her grandfather.
