Bulletin Announcing Outbreak of World War II, September 1939

On September 1, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland. As Britain and France declared war on Germany, all Europe convulsed to one earth-shaking event after another. Wartime developments emerged so often and so quickly that radio coverage had to shift from special crisis reports to full-time, systematic news broadcasts. Robert Trout and veteran analyst Elmer Davis helped lead CBS through this transition as they constantly monitored wire reports, short-wave transcripts, and trans-Atlantic cables and telephone calls.
