Winedale - Rug Hooking Seminar
16th Annual Rug Hooking Seminar, May 16-19, 2007.
The Winedale Rug Hooking Seminar is designed to teach participants to hook rugs as they were made in the 1800s, by pulling wool fabric strips (not yarn) through a burlap base with a tool similar to a crochet hook. Continuous loops turn new and old wool into rugs, pillows, or wall hangings. Create your own design or hook a primitive, floral, geometric, or pictorial pattern. The seminar instructor is Cynthia Norwood of Kirtland, Ohio; P. D. Hankamer of Hankamer, Texas, will teach the beginner class; and Karen Maddox of Kerrville, Texas, will offer a special class. A small on-site store will sell wool, books, and supplies.
Participants may attend as many days as they desire. You may arrive at any time, but lectures are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The workshop accommodates all levels and styles of rug hooking. You may begin a new project, work on a current project, or bring something that has been hidden in the closet! Another option is to design your own rug with Cynthia's assistance. We have wonderful lighting and you may hook as late as you desire each evening.

BEGINNER/NOVICE HOOKERS: We recommend beginners attend two days of the seminar for the best experience, although one day will give the beginner plenty of confidence to hook. Supplies may be purchased at class time. Kits range in size as well as price, with a variety of styles and choices on hand. Each kit includes precut wool strips, burlap or monk's cloth, a pattern, and a hook. Participants need to bring scissors and a quilting hoop. Some hoops will be available for purchase. Each beginning student will receive handouts, written instructions, and list of suppliers. Materials will be available for viewing.
EXPERIENCED RUG HOOKERS: Karen Maddox will teach a special class on Thursday afternoon for experienced hookers. Here's your chance to learn the techniques Karen uses for her work published in Celebrations, Rug Hooking Magazine, and the ATHA Newsletter. She will teach "Apple Bucket," a design based on "Basket and Apple Bucket" that appeared in Celebrations XV. The 14" x 14" pattern includes shading that can be hooked using wide or fine cut. The $73 kit includes the pattern on monk's cloth, uncut wool, and instructions. To purchase the kit, contact Karen at karen39m@ktc.com or (830) 257-3741.

EXHIBIT: On Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. we will have an impromptu rug exhibit. Please bring items to share with the group. Items shown before are welcome because there will be new people who have not seen them. Be proud of your work and be willing to share! Cameras are welcome.
DYEING: On Friday afternoon, if there is enough interest, methods of dyeing wool will be demonstrated with hands-on participation. The cost is $15 payable at the beginning of the class. Bring your problem wools. Samples, dye formulas, and handouts will be available.
RUG HOOKING SEMINAR WILL BEGIN AT 1 P.M. ON WEDNESDAY.
