Message from Executive Director Don Carleton

December 2012

Dr. Don Carleton, Executive Directory of the Briscoe Center

My views on the nature and importance of history have been at the root of my work in creating, building, and guiding the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History as a major research institution. I believe the cause of history is one of utmost importance: everything we can think of has its history and belongs to history. But even as the Briscoe Center’s mission centers on the preservation of evidence from the past, we must consider the future. It is our responsibility to ensure that the rich and varied collections under the Briscoe Center’s stewardship are accessible in ways that better serve the needs of the public for years to come.

That is why I ask you to consider making a gift to the Briscoe Center’s Campaign to Make History, a $3.9 million initiative to fund the renovation of our space in Sid Richardson Hall, Unit 2 – a space which opened in 1971. No significant improvements have been made to the building during our 41 years of public service. This renovation will include a new Reading Room equipped for the technological needs of a new generation of researchers, a 4,000-square-foot Exhibit Gallery to showcase our collections, and a seminar room for public programs.

The Office of Executive Vice President and Provost Steve Leslie has committed a $1 million challenge grant to support the Campaign to Make History. In order to leverage that $1 million contribution, the Briscoe Center must raise $2 million. Your gift, which is tax deductible, will help us meet Provost Leslie’s challenge.

People from diverse fields of study and all walks of life are coming together to support the Campaign to Make History. Through the generous support of the family of Governor Dolph Briscoe, private foundations, and individual donors, we are making great progress toward our goal. Every contributor will be acknowledged by name in a special donor recognition area of our renovated space. I would be honored to add your name to this list of those who care deeply about Texas and United States history.

Thank you for thinking of the Briscoe Center as you consider your end-of-year charitable contributions.

Don Carleton, Ph.D.
Executive Director
J. R. Parten Chair in the Archives of American History
