President Carter places flowers on the grave of a soldier at the American cemetery above Omaha Beach in Normandy. Carter was in France on a diplomatic trip to meet with French President Giscard d'Estang.

Jimmy Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in 1946. The future president then served as a naval officer for seven years.
