After being named the Republican nominees for president and vice president, Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew wave to their supporters at the Republican Convention in Miami Beach. In a volatile year for Americans, Nixon chose the former governor of Maryland as his running mate and handily won his party's nomination.
Did you know?
Spiro Agnew has the dubious distinction of being the first vice president to resign. Under investigation by the Justice Department on allegations of widespread political corruption, Agnew's resignation came the same day he pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of tax evasion.
