The explosion on liftoff of the space shuttle Challenger left the nation and the world shocked and dismayed. The flight, carried live on national television, claimed the lives of seven astronauts, including New Hampshire school teacher Christa McAuliffe. The disaster grounded the space shuttle fleet for three years while experts investigated its cause.
