 | George Washington started out the presidency by serving two four-year terms, and no president sought more than two until Franklin Roosevelt--who was elected to a third term in 1940 and a fourth in 1944. The Twenty-Second Amendment was then ratified in 1951, limiting the time a president can be in office to two terms. |
