Wally McNamee:

Sports photography has been an important part of my career. I think it's just real excellent training as a photojournalist, a news photographer. You don't ever get a chance to do it over again. You got to be ready. You got to be ready. I mean you got to be thinking about what you're doing and you have to be alert to what's going on and you have to have the right lens. You know before auto-focusing came along, you had to be good at auto-focusing your camera. With the advent of auto-focus, it has become somewhat easier to do sports photography. But, I just think it's good training. And, I certainly—well, I've always loved sports. And this was, in sports photography, it was a way for me to get away from Washington and do another kind of photography. And I think a difficult subject to do well.
