The Briscoe Center for American History has a significant collection of telephone and city directories for most Texas cities and towns from roughly the late 19th century through the present day. Directories in this database are indexed by city/town name.
Due to preservation concerns, The Texas Directories Collection is no longer a self service collection. Directories must be requested for use in the Reading Room by completing green call slips which include the city name, type of directory (criss-cross, City directory, yellow pages etc.) and desired years. No more than five (5) directories will be pulled at a time. Remote requests for loops will be considered on an extremely limited basis, and you may be invited to the Briscoe Center to research on your own or to hire a proxy researcher.
In accordance with Briscoe Center for American History Photocopying Policies, All Texas city and telephone directories must be photocopied by CAH staff. Some directories may be too fragile to be photocopied at all. Patrons must complete the Request Photocopy Form (PDF 274 KB). Researchers, using personal cameras, may photograph items from the Texas directories collection. Researchers must complete an Personal Camera Use Agreement. The resulting images are for research only and may not be published.
