Searching for directories

  1. Enter the name of the location that you are searching for in the search box. The location can be the name of a city, town, metropolitan area, county, geographical area or institution. Please be aware that the search box does not accept Boolean operators such as "and" and "or".
  2. Selecting a directory type is optional. By default all directory types are selected. Selecting a directory type will narrow your results.
  3. Entering a date range is optional. Entering a date range will narrow your results.
  4. Click the Search button. If the Briscoe Center For American History has any directories matching your search criteria, search results are displayed.
  5. Click the name of the directory you want to view. A citation screen displays with more detailed information about the directory including the years that are available. Once you have found the directory you are looking for, you must fill out green call slip to request the directory in the reading room.

Browsing for directories

  1. Click the “Browse” button to go to the “Browse” page.
  2. Clicking on a letter will result in a list of locations starting with that letter.
  3. Click the location you are researching. A list of all the directories containing listings for that location will be displayed.
  4. Click the name of the directory you want to view. A citation screen displays with more detailed information about the directory including the years that are available. Once you have found the directory you are looking for, you must fill out a green call slip to request the directory in the reading room.
