Reference - Offsite Materials

Policies & Procedures

Due to space limitations, many of the Center for American History's collections are stored offsite in the Library Storage Facility (LSF) and in the Collections Deposit Library (CDL). To determine if the collection you're interested in is stored offsite, contact the Reference Staff.

The delivery schedule for the collections stored at the Library Storage Facility (LSF) has been affected by University wide cost cutting measures. Until further notice, offsite materials will be delivered only three times weekly. The Center's approximate delivery schedule is noted below. Please keep in mind that the day a patron submits a request may not be the day the request is entered into the system.

Collections stored at the Collections Deposit Library (CDL) will be delivered in forty-eight hours or two business days.

Because of storage shortages for retrieved offsite collections, retrievals are limited to seven items per day. There is no rush schedule for retrieval. You will be contacted when your order has arrived and is ready for use in the Reading Room. Materials retrieved from offsite storage will be stored onsite for two weeks and then returned to offsite storage if they have not been used by a researcher.

If LSF materials are ordered by CAH staff on: They can arrive no earlier than:
Monday Thursday
Tuesday Thursday
Wednesday Monday
Thursday Monday
Friday Tuesday

To retrieve materials stored offsite, please download and legibly complete the
Request for Materials Stored Offsite form or fill it out online with all necessary information. If you are onsite you will need to fill out Yellow Callslips for Archival Materials and Green Callslips for Published Materials and turn them in with the form to Center for American History staff.
