Newspaper Holdings at the Center for American History

A printed list of more than 3,000 newspaper titles provides access to the newspapers housed in the Center's Newspaper Collection. The list includes Texas, U. S., non-U. S., and Natchez Trace Collection newspapers. The Texas index is arranged alphabetically by city name. The U. S. and Natchez Trace Collection titles are entered under state and city, the non-U. S. papers by country and city. Newspaper titles then appear alphabetically under the city name. The frequency of publication, if known, and date range follow the title. Information on whether the title is held in hardcopy or microfilm is also included. Revised semiannually.

George W. Littlefield Collection for Southern History Newspapers

A printed list of more than 1,300 U. S. newspapers provides access to newspapers housed at the Collections Deposit Library of the University of Texas Libraries. The list is arranged alphabetically by state and then city. Newspaper titles then appear alphabetically under the city name. The frequency of publication, if known, follows the title. Date holdings are detailed. All of these titles are held in hard copy.

Card Catalog of Newspapers—Not comprehensive, but still useful to research. No longer maintained.

1. Arranged alphabetically by city of publication and thereunder by newspaper title. Cards indicate specific issues, but are not always complete since this system is no longer maintained.

2. Chronological Index to Texas Newspapers, 1813–1951. A listing of the Center's holdings with titles arranged alphabetically by year.

3. Before 1877—Arranged alphabetically by geographic location and thereunder by title.

4. Foreign Language—Grouped by language, alphabetized under geographic location and thereunder by title.

5. Religious and Special Interest—Agricultural; Black; Business and Retail; Cattle Industry; College and High School Education; Fraternal Orders, Clubs, etc.; Industrial; Humor and Satire; Labor; Literary and Cultural; Military and Veterans; Oil Industry; Political: Republican, Progressive, Populist; Prohibition and anti-Prohibition; Racist; Real Estate; Religious; State Institutions. Arranged alphabetically by geographic location, thereunder by title.

6. Special Editions—Index to Centennial, anniversary editions. Titles entered under city.

7. Newspaper Extract Collection—Citations to newspaper articles about Texas published in non-Texas titles. Arranged chronologically and then alphabetically by newspaper title.

8. C. L. Greenwood Index—Alphabetical index to biographical sketches appearing in books and persons cited in marriage and obituary notices in selected Texas newspapers from 1850–1900. Some of the titles indexed are not part of the Center's holdings.

9. Index to Selected Newspapers—Biographical index compiled by the Works Progress Administration, arranged alphabetically, indexing selected Texas newspapers, 1829–1936. A few of the sources cited are not part of the Center's holdings. Selected titles include:

The University Libraries' database, which contains records for 3.5 million items—mostly books and periodicals—in the UT Austin Libraries. Includes complete bibliographic information for over 4,000 U. S. newspaper titles (about 2,500 Texas titles) and item/volume-specific holdings located at the Center for American History, the Benson Latin American Collection, the Perry-Castañeda Library, and the Collections Deposit Library.

OCLC Bibliographic Database

National bibliographic database used by the U. S. Newspaper Program (USNP) to maintain machine-readable newspaper database. The United States Newspaper Program, which is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, is a cooperative effort to provide access to all newspapers published and held in the United States and its Trust Territories; and preserve those newspapers considered significant for research. Provides access to more than 100,000 newspapers published in the United States ranging from Publick Occurrences (1690) to USA Today. The union list provides current volume-specific holdings information from the Library of Congress, libraries, archives, and historical societies in 42 states and territories including Texas.

U. S. Newspaper Program National Union List, 3rd edition (OCLC)

Derived from and corresponds to the online United States Newspaper Program (USNP) Union List described above. This national database of U. S. newspaper bibliographic, location, and holdings information is being built by USNP participants with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Library of Congress, and OCLC. This microfiche package includes:

  • Basic bibliographic information for more than 100,000 newspapers published in the U. S.
  • Volume-specific holdings information from USNP participants, arranged alphabetically by title
  • Cross-references from variant titles to actual title
  • Two indexes—place of publication (state and city) and language (predominant language of the newspaper).
