Natchez, Mississippi, served as a port through which many traveled to Texas. On June 22, 1836, a boat from Louisville registered in Natchez as carrying 250 volunteers bound for Texas.
An Account of the Yellow Fever
The state of public health in Texas was precarious at best, and epidemics of cholera, typhus, and other diseases were common. Ashbel Smith gained national notice with a study of yellow fever in Texas.
