Portrait of James Bowie / n.d. / Prints and Photographs Collection
A native of Kentucky, James Bowie became a Mexican citizen when he moved to Texas in 1830. He later fought in the battle of the Alamo, where the volunteer army elected him as their commander. Bowie's active participation ended when he fell ill. At the end of the battle, Bowie was found with gunshots to the head.
