Description: | Despite failing to get Congressional approval, President Mirabeau Lamar commissioned an expedition to Santa Fe, New Mexico to extend commerce by way of a western trade route. In June 1841, a volunteer military force accompanied the merchants on the expedition, but all were met with resistence in New Mexico. Forced to march to Mexico City and imprisoned there, the prisoners gained their release in April 1942. |
